    WMV HD plugin?

Sometime ago I joined one of the sites (of the Kink.com family) that's got banners at the top of this page. The content is great, but the picture looked jumpy and "high-compressed" although the sound and the colour quality were very good, so I reckoned there had to be something about the codec (the format of the film). More than a year ago I'd been a member of hogtied.com (same group of sites) and I'd kept some videos I downloaded from there, and plainly their motion was much smooother than in these new ones, even though it was the same type of video - wmv - and the bitrate of data is higher in these recent vids.

This morning I happened to find the reason; noticed a small tag "in hd wmv" on the site. HD WMV is a new codec of course, an upgarade of standard wmv - the proprietary Microsoft Wiondows Media Player format. But I can't locate a plugin to playback this new quality in WM player (version 10). I'm sure some of the knowledgeable cyber people on this forum can help me with this, though!

it seems that you will have to update to the new version of WMP which is 11. in there will automatically have the codecs you need.

I have WMP ver. 11 so there is a newer one out like cg says. Hopefully that will do the trick for you. Warning, I was told and have no real proof of this, some computers may balk at running WMP 11. So I'd really make sure I could roll back if necessary. Hopefully creating a restore point may facilitate in that quest. Good luck.

I'm running v11 with XP and don't have many problems. Very occasionally, I've had a file that says it requires and additional codec but these are easily available and easy to install.

Failing that, I've opened video files in DivX Player without any problem

I have had no problems either and I too run XP Pro and Home and have several machines with ver. 11 on them. However, where I buy my computers, and they work with them every day, they told me they have had instances where ver. 11 corrupted some files so badly that the OS to had to be reloaded. This is more than likely a very isolated instance admittedly. It only becomes serious when it happens to you so still I believe creating a restore point is a good idea.

Thanks folks, it seems I'll have to install XP SP2 as well to provide for Media Player v11 - avoided SP2 for a long time because it had been reported to interfere with some non-Windows programs, but by now it's definitely needed; many programs now require it. I'll be making a major reboot and rewiring soon - planned before - and then I'll get SP2 and WMP 11 in as well.

you might seriously consider trying another media player, I use media player classic, and have no issues with codecs, the other nice thing about MPC is that you can use it to play back real media, and QuickTime using a couple of plug-ins, if you want to know more about MPC, PM me, and I will send you a link. As far as service pack two goes, I think you are pretty safe in upgrading to it. Also I forgot to mention MPC is a free program. Hope this helps
