W/we have never had to use lube -- if you use freshly peeled ginger, it's sorta moist and a little squishy, and you're able to shape it into a "finger like" butt-plug shape, making it easy to slide it in. I've definitely heard that lube (if it's not something like lemon juice as I think denuseri is suggesting LOL) totally destroys the sensation because it wicks away all of the nice gingery juices.

That's just what I've heard, of course.
