I have for a long time used the example of a mountain, when talking about using a place one is not going for direction. That is, one may shoot for perfection, knowing it cannot be achieved, but understanding that with perfection as the "direction setter" one will be better when trying for it, even though it is impossible. I use a mountain to demonstrate walking a direction (toward the mountain) even though it is not where one is, in the end, going. I think a lighthouse is a MUCH better example of this, but it is your idea, and thus I ask your permission to use it, as I teach and discuss from time to time.
