What do folks think of a sub taking pain killers prior to a BDSM torture session. My friend thinks that it will allow her to enjoy the experience more if the edge is taken off the pain by the panadol. I'm not sure if it is a good idea?

I don't think Panadol will be a problem. (I also don't think it will help, but that's another discussion entirely) If the painkiller were heavier duty ie codeine which converts to morphine in your body; doxylamine which is a muscle relaxant that causes drowsiness or an anti-inflammatory (nurofen, voltaren, aleve, ponstan, naprogesic etc) that can encourage bleeding if the skin is broken then I'd worry. Paracetamol generally has no effect on your mental alertness or ability to make decisions (obviously there is always going to be the odd person who reacts like that, but they are definitely the minority) so it shouldn't affect his/her mind at all.
Obviously I'll apply all the disclaimers here: don't use paracetamol if you have problems with your liver, if you have been drinking alcohol and don't take more than 4000mg of paracetamol per day at a dosage of 500-1000mg every 4-6 hours.![]()

Wouldn't taking a pain killer be like cheating yourself and your Dom out of having an honest experience? Plus, how could you really gage your threshold for pain if medicated against it?![]()
Most pain killers won't have any effect on sudden, externally-oriented pain anyway, so I doubt it would matter. Taking a couple of Tylenol before a spanking (yeah I know we're talking about stronger stuff here, but this is for the example) is going to have no effect on how your ass feels while someone's caning the hell out of it. To have any kind of real effect, a person would have to have a shot of novocaine in each butt cheek beforehand.
However, I feel that playing under the influence of any serious narcotic is a no-no. In the same sense that playing under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs is bad. I just don't recommend it at all. The reason a person feels pain when they're being tortured is because someone is damaging their body. To dull the sensations of the pain also dulls the mind's accurate interpretation of the severity of the damage. Fooling your body into not thinking you have a hemorrage doesn't mean you really don't have one. I'd just take Nanacy's advice and "Just say no."
It's in the blood...
Wow! Albear - what an informed reply.
Are you in the medical industry?
You've confirmed what I thought but wndered what others felt about it.
Thanks for you thoughtful response.
Actually I've found that folks on this website are really nice - It turns out that we "perverts" are really a pretty nice bunch.

Paracetamol is classed as an analgesic/anti-pyretic, but it's acting mechanism is largely unknown. It's thought that it inhibits the production of prostaglandins that are involved in the registration of pain. So while it technically could be an issue with the sub not registering the pain soon enough, I really don't think it's strong enough to block out bad/strong/lots of pain. I also don't think taking it pre-emptively will help very much.... I did have a well thought out reason why I thought that.... but I lost it![]()

I agree with many on this thread when I say that I think it is a bad idea to meddle with any drugs when playing. Personally, though, I prefer not to take even paracetamol when I have a headache never mind to stop any other pain. Just a personal preference...
Most painkillers will not stop pain applied externally so there would not be any effect if you took them for play purposes. And you really should not take such things that casually. Paracetamol in particular can cause problems for the liver if taken to excess and I know of several people who are in fact physically addicted to drugs like Ibuprofen to the extent that they cannot stop taking it without suffering extreme migraines. The body can adapt to drugs so that, in order to get the same effect, you have to take a higher dose and higher doses can lead to more side effects and more damage.
Why would you want to do that? Isn't the pain half the fun?
Not all the time!![]()

I once had taken a nurofen prior to play as I wasn't feeling good and was suspended later on (2-3 hours later). I got very very bad bruising marks which I attribute to the nurofen as I don't usually bruise up that bad, but these marks lasted about 3-4 days and looked quite horrific.
LOL... I know I saw this a little late, but being a Brit ex-pat N.America... I couldn't help but notice the confusion. We're talking about the same thing--paracetamol IS tylenol (acetaminophen over here), lol.Originally Posted by BDSM_Tourguide

The wole idea is ridiculous. What is the point of torture without the full sensation of pain?Originally Posted by Sweep

I appreciate your comments Nikka.
Your Crucifixion post is the most erotic thing that I have ever read.
I still have a lot of experiences to explore in this game and your views as a most eloquent and experienced sub are great to hear,
Great to see you posting again after all you've been through
genaraly play PLUS drugs is bad idea.
Pain killers will either have no real effect or make you too insenstive... the last can be quite dangerous in several ways.
Pain killers ALWAY have tolerance. ALWAYS. Taking more and more or swiching to stronger stuff is something that cannot be called "fun" Oh no.

I agree re: painkillers. The whole purpose of pain (other than what we kinksters use it for) is to warn you when your body might suffer damage so you limit that damage. IE: if you feel a burning pain, you may tend to pull your hand back up off the stove element. That's the reason for the pain.Originally Posted by pejanon
If we take painkillers--even mild ones, we've effectively disabled that warning system--or at least modified the stimulus, so we are less likely to know where our limits are. That could be dangerous.
IMO if you take other types of drugs, i.e. recreational types, there is nothing wrong with some play--as long as the dominant partner is sober and in control, and as long as you aren't involving yourself in physical practices that you are required to monitor your limits. For example, physical punishment or very strenuous bondage would not be a good idea. A little mental domination or light bondage can be amazing when combined with your favourite treat. For obvious reasons I wouldn't ever recommend hard drugs and certainly play time is no time to experiment.
As an aside, I want to point out that some of the feelings I get from bdsm rival any drug i've ever taken--with no side effects, save for a few red marks, lol.

I agree re recreational drugs. However - notice how many conditional you had to use?Originally Posted by csr
I do not pretend that I never use my favorite 'treats' while playing. But I do my best not to use them FOR the play. IMO 'clear headed' play is more intensive . than anything that can be achieved with dulling/stimulating substances. However it can be more demanding for all parties ...
After all we have our drug!
OH YES! I agree 120 percent! I would even dare to say that it is actually consciousness expanding - Hey even music sounds more intensive, doesn't it?Originally Posted by csr

Well, I wanted to be clear that I'm not espousing irresponsible drug use. People need to be responsible with drugs in the same way they are with alcohol, in order not to harm themselves and/or others.Originally Posted by pejanon
I like the way you put that. Sometimes play under the influence can be an insteresting, different experience, but I wouldn't want to do it as a habit--also you're right that usually the most amazing experiences happen sober as a nun. Also, I find that middle of the day play is better that way because I don't even like it as much if I'm tired, which I tend to be often after a long day at work.Originally Posted by pejanon

I thoroughly agree with Nikka. The purpose of pain play is FOR the pain.
For the rush of endorphins, or whatever else way your body naturally responds.
Now, for AFTER a session........use any/all means necessary to minimize the damage!
